Here's some of my real gear purchased for my upcoming hike on the Appalachian Trail. I'm a plus-sized woman that finds it difficult to find women's hiking clothes that fit well, so you will see here that some items are actually men's hiking pants, etc. As far as undergarments, I picked out a sports bra and also Hanes microfiber panties. Everything I wear has to be synthetic and quick dry. There's a saying on the trail that "cotton kills." Cotton takes too long to dry, and by that time hypothermia can set in. I've got a good selection of rain gear, sturdy hiking boots (also men's because I have big feet!), trekking poles, and an awesome backpack with "Breezeway" technology (which equals less sweat from carrying a 40+ lb. load on my back!). My water bottle is part practical, part talisman, as I love bluebirds and hope to see some on the trail.
